![]() ![]() ![]() It’s a bedtime story about an adventure, and every adventure needs a hero. It’s about whatever it needs to be about, whatever story the creators want to tell at that moment. The Legend of Zelda isn’t about history, lore, or complex politics. The key to Zelda‘s ability to redefine itself is never better explained than by Wind Waker‘s very first line: “This is but one of the legends of which the people speak…” With a vast Hyrule Field spanning a distance nearly as large as Ocarina of Time’s entire overworld. Some loved them both equally while a small number preferred the GCN Master Quest version. The results were fairly interesting - with a majority (50 at the time of this posting) of fans preferring the 3D version, while a healthy number still had an affinity towards the N64 original. Still, the game received well-earned praise for its map size when it was originally released for the Nintendo GameCube and Wii in 2006. Two weeks ago we asked you what version of Ocarina of Time do you like best. Twilight Princess is about 14 times smaller than BOTW. Does Wind Waker inform what I value in stories now? Look at the contemporaries mentioned above: Knights of the Old Republic has a grand sense of adventure and colorful characters, Splinter Cell manages to poke fun at itself despite its political technothriller ambitions, Halo is bursting with personality from chatty Marines to cowardly Grunts, and Psychonauts is about a young boy stoked to be going on an adventure! One of my favorite games of the last few years, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, is high-stakes and high-drama but still finds moments of levity and wonder.
